Four Tips on How to Choose an LCD TV

Once obtainable only with small screens, LCD (liquid-crystal display) TVs now come with bigger screens suitable for your Home's primary set.

Here are four tips on how to choose the right one:

1). Think about what level of picture quality you are willing to pay for - The best LCD TVs are equipped for excellent picture quality. For a main TV or one you will watch often, it will be best to get an HD set with 1024x768 resolutions. On screens larger than 30 inches or so, 1366x758 has the potential to offer better quality, though native screen resolution in and of itself does not guarantee a certain level of picture quality. It will be better to get a standard definition LCD TV only for small sets used for casual viewing, where you would not want the cable or satellite box you generally need to receive HD signals. The picture quality almost certainly will not be as good as what you will get with an HD set.

2). Make sure you verify the viewing angle - Viewing angles have enhanced, so a lot of new LCD TVs display a better image from off-center than old sets did - a must if several people will watch the TV at once. Some sets have wider viewing angles than others do. Before you buy, see how the picture looks if you step off to the side or move up and down. With some you will see dimmer, somewhat washed out image as your viewing position angles away, particularly in a vertical direction.

3). Make sure inputs are easy to use - On many LCD TVs, the connections are on the side or back of the TV and might be tough to reach. Some bigger models have a split control unit to which you connect all your audio and video devices. You then only have one cable going from the control box to the panel itself. That is a bonus for wall mounting and can make the inputs easier to get to.

4). Think about a set that can also be used as a computer monitor - If you need a computer monitor as well as a TV, check connectivity options. An HD set with high native resolution is best for computer use. A standard VGA connection works with all computers, a (DVI) input would be compatible with newer midrange computers.

HDMI Cables - Are They Necessary?

I recently had the pleasure and the misfortune to shop for a new television. Now I have been a rear projection screen man for almost ten years, but with the new evolution of the Plasma and LCD technology I was soon to become the newest convert in the evolution of digital television.

It was not by choice that I made this decision, but by necessity. I was the proud owner of a sixty inch rear projection screen television that decided upon itself one cold Saturday morning to go on the blink. After making several phone calls to the hard to find television service techs, the decision was made that it was time to purchase a new television.

Now if that shopping experience wasn't painful enough when looking at the price tags on these high tech devices,just making the decision between plasma and LCD took a considerable amount of time. I finally made my decision, bit the bullet and spent a considerable amount of dollars on what I considered to be my best choice. Then came the bomb shell, the HDMI cables!

After making all those decisions, it was time for the salesman to explain to me about the HDMI cable that was necessary in order for me to have the picture quality that my new plasma screen television demanded. Now don't get me wrong, I understand that this is where most of the big chain electronic stores make the bulk of their profit, but WOW, the price on these cables was through the roof. Then the big question in my mind, are they really necessary?

The answer to that is both yes and no. If you are in to electronics as I am, then you will be sure to notice the difference in picture quality. If you are a novice at all of this, well then you may never notice the difference. Here are a few questions you may want to ask yourself before spending big dollars on cables:

Will not using these high end cables hurt your equipment? No it will not.

Do the other devices in your theater array have the current technology to make the difference in picture quality? If not, then you may want to either replace that equipment as well, or work with what you have.

Does your local cable company support HD, and how many channels are available in HD at this time? In my area, HD channels at this time are scarce.

Can I get these cables at a better price? Yes you certainly can and about a third of the cost that even the big discount outlets like those that start with the letter "W", if you get my drift.

It's a big dollar purchase, go at it with a strategy. Know what your maximum budget is before you go shopping and do your research, research research before making any purchase.

A 1080p Flat Screen TV Guide - Why Are Some 1080p Flat Screen TVs Better Than Others?

For many TV viewers, their dream is for a new 1080p flat screen TV. They'd like nothing better than to buy one, find one, or get one as a gift. It doesn't matter, as long as they get to watch one of these TVs instead of the big clunker they're watching now.

The fact is that TV technology has cone a very long way in the last 10 years, with a huge improvement in flat screen picture quality being the most noticeable benefit. In the early years of flat panel TVs, weather they were LCD or plasma, picture quality was noticeably lacking. Sure, they were thin, you could hang them on your wall, and your neighbors would be jealous, but really, their pictures looked pretty bad.

Times have changed. For all but the most jaded videophiles, almost any new flat panel TV ranks just under a gift from God, especially those of the 1080p variety. Even the bottom feeders look ok, and the best are nothing short of spectacular. What separates the best flat screen TV from the also rans?

As you might have guessed, a great flat screen TV, as in the days of TV gone by, will have a better picture than its lesser endowed brethren. One of the first performance statistics to be thrown around in ads, reviews and by your local TV salesperson is the resolution. All flat panel TV pictures are made up of tiny, colored dots called pixels. The set's resolution is simply the number of pixels it uses to make the picture. Flat panel TVs come in two basic resolutions; 1080p and 720p (which can actually be 768p, depending on the TVs manufacturer). All else being equal, more pixels is better.

Ah, but seldom is all else equal. In fact, many other things besides resolution are important when you start looking at picture quality. Some of the more important things to look at are the set's contrast ratio, black level, gray scale reproduction, color rendition, and lack of video artifacts.

The contrast ratio is simply the difference between the lightest and darkest black and brightest white the TV can produce. There are two basic ways this is measured; using a checkerboard pattern, or full on / full off. A larger number is better, but manufacturers seem to come up with endless ways to fudge this number to benefit their own TVs. Suffice it to say that if you're looking at two different TVs side by side the one with a better contrast ratio will look better.

Black level is a measure of how little light the set lets through when areas of the screen are supposed to be completely dark. In the old days of tube televisions that was no problem. The way that technology worked, if a part of the screen was supposed to be completely dark, the beam inside the TV tube just didn't scan it, so no light was produced.

With flat panel TVs, no area of the screen can be completely turned off, the black level is a measure of how well the TV can contain (LCD) or reduce (plasma) the screens luminance. Lower is better for a better picture. There aren't too many TV manufacturers that publish minimum luminance (that's what tells how little light the TV produces) specifications for their TVs, so you just have to play it by eye.

Gray scale is extremely important. Proper gray scale reproduction is the ability of the TV to reproduce truly neutral shades of gray at all levels of brightness. Many sets tend to trend toward blue, green or red instead of being a truly balanced gray. To make matters worse, they will sometimes favor one shade in the lighter areas of the picture, and another in the lighter areas.

You may think "That's okay, I never watch black and white TV shows anyway." Well, in addition to making sure black and white programming looks correct, all the colors on your TV screen, weather it's LCD or plasma, 1080p or 720p, rely on a properly rendered gray scale to be accurate. That's why good gray scale is one of the most important aspects of an accurate picture.

While only some TVs are really good in this regard as they're delivered, the good news is that many TVs can be calibrated to be very accurate, by a service technician or an ISF certified custom installer with the proper equipment.

Color rendition is exactly what it sounds like. It's a measure of how well the TV renders color. A set with good color rendition will produce rich accurate colors. A TV with poor color rendition will display weak (or in some cases, oversaturated), inaccurate ones. Which would you prefer? As noted above, good gray scale reproduction is one of the foundations of color rendition, but far from the only component. The TV's color decoder, panel construction and quality of it's power supply all come into play when it reproduces color.

One of the first places flat panel TV manufacturers skimp when they're building a TV is the video processing circuitry. There are many reasons for this. The main one is cost. Good video processing circuitry, such as the Silicon Optix HQV solution, are relatively expensive, while there are many other less expensive, albeit not as capable solutions on the market. In a market relentlessly driven to lower retail prices, every dollar counts. TV manufacturers feel they can make a tradeoff in the video processing capabilities of their sets and few consumers will notice.

The upshot for the consumer is that sets with poor video processing will exhibit video artifacts. Some of the more troubling video problems are moiré patterns, mosquito noise and "jaggies".

Moire' patterns are a fluctuating rainbow appearance in alternating black and white areas of the picture, such as referee's shirts. This effect can also be seen in other alternating line patterns, such as moving bleachers in NASCAR events. Thankfully for NASCAR, their seats are seldom empty, as the effect is more pronounced when the seats are empty.

Mosquito noise is seen in the transitions between dark and light areas of the picture and looks like mosquitoes flying around the transitions' edge. Jaggies are seen in moving, diagonal lines. Instead of being smooth, they will be jagged, or stair-stepped in appearance.

Another area to examine before making a 1080p flat screen TV purchase is weather or not the set has the inputs you'll need to connect all your components. For example, you may want to plug in a laptop computer. Some TVs have an HD-15 computer input, as is found on a laptop, while many do not.

Does the set have a sufficient number of HDMI inputs for connecting digital video devices, such as BluRay players, DVRs, online movie terminals, or cable boxes? Which version of HDMI are the inputs? HDMI 1.3 is required to accept the latest high bit rate color formats (of which there is little or no need for yet, but it is coming).

Many flat panel TVs now have network connection, USB ports or card slots to facilitate displaying digital video. Consumers are plugging in thumb drives, USB hard drives, and memory cards to show slideshows of family photos, for example. The proliferation of movie download services and terminals will make Ethernet ports and USB connectivity more important going forward.

One secret of the 1080p flat panel TV world is that there are really only a few companies that actually build the flat panel portion of the TV itself. For example, as of this writing, only 3 companies, Panasonic, LG and Samsung, produce plasma panels. In the LCD arena Sony, LG-Phillips, S-LCD (a Samsung/Sony joint venture), Hitachi Displays (a Panasonic, Hitachi, and Canon joint venture), and Sharp own large flat panel display manufacturing facilities. All the other companies buy their panels from one of these companies.

There is much to think about when evaluating a new 1080p flat screen TV. No matter which set you choose, it will probably be a huge step up from what you were watching before. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't put some thought into making what is, for most people, a major purchase.

A little bit of time spent finding the right flat screen now will ensure years of enjoyment from your new TV. After all, the difference between a good flat screen TV and a great one may only be a few hundred dollars, but the set will be with you for many years to come.

LCD Backlighting For HDTV

LCD is winning the race to be the dominant display technology for HDTV. According to DisplaySearch, in 2007, the market for LCD (liquid crystal diode) TVs was estimated at $27.4 billion. LCD TV shipments rose a stronger than expected 52% year to year in the second quarter of 2008 to nearly 7.5 million units (79.8% of total HDTV sales).

The LCD screen on a LCD HDTV is a selective light filter. It does not in itself emit light, but selectively filters light passing through the display from the back. Most HDTVs include either a single sheet of luminescent plastic or sidelighting with fluorescent lamps to provide the backlight. Both techniques are difficult to control.

Many consumers focus on screen resolution when selecting a High Def (HDTV) system. Is this HDTV 720p, 1020i, or 1020p? However, when an expert group, the SMPTE (Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers), recently ranked the importance of screen resolution, it ranked fourth. The SMPTE ranked contrast ratio, color saturation, color temperature and grayscale ahead of screen resolution in importance. The Imaging Science Foundation reached a similar conclusion. Backlighting is the key component to improvement in contrast ratio and grayscale.

It is important that an LCD system allows for adjustment of the level of backlighting, and preferably, performs this function automatically. This will improve the contrast of the picture. Also, a reduced backlight level will also reduce power consumption and extend lamp life, as the power used and lamp lifetime is directly related to the backlight level. A lamp with a 50,000 hour lifetime at 6 milliamps may only have a 30,000 hour lifetime if the current is 7 milliamps, just 1 milliamp higher (Example: Sharp Electronics LCD Display).

Another important factor in the choice of backlighting is the consideration of "blur". Blur occurs when there is rapid motion in the programming, such as sports. When the picture changes quickly, the pixels can lag in response. Effective backlight engineering can reduce this significantly by strobing the backlighting, so that the individual pixels do not remain lit longer than needed. Examples of this technique include the Philips "Aptura" and the Samsung "LED Motion Plus".

Sidelighting

With sidelighting, the backlight is located in the back of the LCD panel, and to each side to create panel illumination. To make the light more uniform, a light diffuser is located between the lamps and the rear of the optical filter module. Most LCD systems that use sidelighting use cold cathode fluorescents (CCF) lamps. This technology provides a very bright white light. The lifetime of the lamps is usually between 10,000 to 20,000 hours (6-12 years at a rate of 5 hours of use per day).

The most important disadvantage is that the intensity of light cannot be varied locally, and sidelighting can look non-uniform. Some CCF lamps contain mercury. This is an ecological disadvantage.

The major drawbacks:

Conventional Backlighting

Most backlighting is performed with a single sheet of electroluminescent plastic. These panels can age (though improvements in this area have reduced this problem). Electroluminescent Panel backlighting uses colored phosphors to generate light. Displays using this technique can be thin and lightweight, and provide even light distribution.

The major drawbacks:


Limited life of 3,000 to 5,000 hours to half brightness (2-3 years at a rate of 5 hours of use per day).
The intensity of light cannot be varied locally.

LED Backlighting

LED backlighting uses a matrix of LEDs that can be controlled individually to offer very good control. In this configuration, a large number of LEDs are mounted uniformly behind the display. Brightness improvements in LEDs have made them more practical for backlighting. NEC pioneered this technique with their monitor, the 2180WG. Other companies, such as Samsung, have recently introduced versions of this technology. This should push prices down (the Samsung model cost less than 1/3 the price of a comparable NEC monitor).

This system offers local dimming technology and can achieve 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. True actual black levels (the "Holy Grail" of LCD) are attainable by shutting off a pixel's light source. This can eliminate the grayish black picture typical of many LCD HDTVs. Groups of LEDs can be locally controlled to produce more light, increasing the brightness when necessary.

The problem with conventional white LEDs is that their spectrum is not ideal for photographic reproduction because they are basically blue LEDs with a yellow phosphor on top. Their color spectrum has two peaks, one at blue and another at yellow. White LEDs that are based on a group of red, green and blue LEDs are ideal for the RGB color filters of an LCD and can result in the most saturated colors. Sony's "Triluminos" LED backlight system is an example of this technique.
Sometimes, these HDTVs have a row of LEDs across the top and bottom of the display. This improves the brightness and color reproduction, and enables almost complete uniformity across the display.

LED backlights are much more efficient that alternative techniques. And since the LED backlight waste less energy, less heat is generated, that must be managed with air conditioning. LED backlights offer a long operating lifetime of more than 50,000 hours (more than 25 years of use at a rate of 5 hours a day).

LED backlit systems may not show well in a typical retail environment. Typically, the screens are somewhat reflective in order to achieve the high contrast ratio, and subsequently, a brightly lit showroom may not flatter this technology. In a more typical less-lit environment, this problem should not be as noticeable.

Engineering Concerns

The electrical engineering is simpler with LED backlights. Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCF) require high AC voltages (1,500 VAC) at startup, and operating voltages of 700 VAC or more. When the lamp is new it may take much less voltage to start, but with age the voltage requirements usually increase, complicating a designer's problem. An electroluminescent panel requires a voltage of about 100 VAC @ 400 Hertz.

A power inverter (to generate VAC) is needed for both CCF and electroluminescent panels to operate with a DC power supply. This is a significant expense, in cost, size, and weight of the system. The best inverter for this application permits the output voltage to automatically increase as the lamps age, extending the useful life of the lamps.

LCD systems with LED backlighting utilize low voltage DC, usually 12 or 24 VDC. This results in a smaller, simpler, and more reliable system. LED backlit systems must be well cooled or their performance can suffer. The LEDs generate less heat than CCF lamps, but the heat is very concentrated. Operating at high temperatures reduces the LED lifetime and shifts their light spectrum, while reducing output luminance.

OLED

A new technology that you will be hearing about in the future is Organic LED (OLED). This technology has a completely different backlight technology, it doesn't need one. Because of this, they draw much less power. And because there is no backlight, an OLED system has a larger viewing angle than an LED system. An OLED display is much thinner than an LCD display. The response time for OLED is faster than normal LCD screens. An average of 8 to 12 milliseconds in response time is normal for a LCD compared to 0.01 milliseconds in response time for an OLED.

Sony introduced an 11" HDTV at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. The new 11" Sony TV is called the "XEL-1". It's very thin (1/10") and currently sells for $2500. Samsung demonstrated a 31" OLED HDTV with 1080P resolution at a tradeshow in Asia in November. LG, Toshiba, Matsushita (Panasonic), and others are investing hundreds of millions of dollars, developing this extremely promising technology. Toshiba has plans to sell a 30" OLED display in 2009. Samsung has announced they will sell large screen OLED HDTVs in 2010.

OLED displays have already been used for some time in digital cameras, cell phones and other devices with relatively small panels, because they are very energy efficient, which is very important in portable devices.

In theory, OLED displays can be more inexpensively manufactured than LCD or plasma displays, meaning that they should not be as expensive. Remember that the first large LCD and Plasma displays were much more expensive when they were first introduced.

Summary

LCD HDTVs and monitors with LED array backlighting are now the approach of choice because they exhibit better image quality while saving power. The ability to locally control light output is key to achieving high contrast ratios.

Dommage, j'étais sur le point d'acheter chez amazon (je suis par ailleurs un bon client pour ce qui concerne les petits et moyens matériels). Pour un téléviseur à près de 1000 euros, j'ai regardé de plus près....

No doubt about it, flat screen HDTVs have gone from being tvs for the enthusiast and the wealthy to the natural replacement choice for the common household. A popular question is which is better, an LCD flat screen tv or a plasma tv?

Plasma tv technology produces lifelike, rich and vibrant colors. Another important consideration is black levels. Although LCD has made advancements in black level, they still have a tough time reproducing the deep true blacks that plasma can produce.

Keep in mind the viewing environment when purchasing a tv. LCDs generally produce a brighter picture that is great for areas with a lot of natural ambient light. This is one reason that when you go in to the typical electronics store that is filled with bright fluorescent lighting, that they will stand out more then plasmas. A major drawback in early plasma tv technology was the "burn in" effect that could occur when bright, static images such as a stock ticker tape or video game score would be displayed for long periods on the screen. While many plasma tvs have a native 720p resolution, they are now offering 1080p full hd models to more directly compete with full HD LCD flat screen models.

While recent gains in LCD technology and new technologies on the horizon such as OLED may eventually threaten plasma tv, it still has a lot to offer in today's market. For the longest time I thought a refurbished TV and a used TV were different terms for the same thing. In fact, I thought refurbished was just a half-dollar word for used. I sure am glad someone set me straight. Knowing the difference saved me from my own ignorance.

When a buddy at work told me he'd just bought a refurbished set online and gave me the store's website address, I just smiled, thanked him and stuck it in my wallet. What I was thinking though was, man, things must be tight for Doug if he's buying a used TV set. I'm really glad I kept my mouth shut though and chose to say nothing. It would have made me look stupid.

A couple of weekends later, I was at his house. We'd gone inside for a cold one and I was looking around for the set he'd gotten such a great deal on. The only one I saw was this massive 52" plasma flat panel on the main wall of the living room. He laughed at the stunned look on my face, but I couldn't hide the fact I was impressed. The thing looked brand new.

He asked if I'd been to the website he'd given me, and I had to admit I hadn't because I thought it was for used TVs. So he explained to me that a refurbished TV was not really used, it was one whose original factory seal had been broken. Maybe somebody took it home for a few days and decided they wanted a different size, or they may have realized as soon as they got it out of the box that it wasn't what they wanted.

For whatever reason, it came back to the store, where it could no longer be sold as new. It's then sent back to the factory where they test it thoroughly, repack it and send it on to distributors they've authorized to sell the 'refurbs' to the general public. Anyway, I've been doing some research of my own since then, trying to scare up a great deal for myself on a refurbished HDTV. I've wanted one for a long time, but the price has kept me from indulging. But now that I know more about refurbished TVs, I may never buy new again. Why pay twice as much if you can't tell the difference between a brand new set and a refurbished one?

I've got my eye on a really sleek Sony 48", but I'll need to decide pretty quick if I want to be sure of getting it. Firstly we have to understand the phrase Screen Resolution and all of that implies. In this case it refers to the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed.

Next up is whether the TV is Hi-Definition Ready and what does this mean? Hi Definition TV essentially makes a TV picture in a quality format that is at least four times better than conventionally available at present.

The next item that we would need to look at is what types of connectors are used between the peripherals used alongside the main Digital TV?

Taking a look at the number of relevant connections and their availability, our score would be 8. As far as overall features are concerned we would give it 10 and for ease of use and overall value for money we would give it, 10 and 10 respectively.

The overall verdict would be WOW what can you say but that this is one of those TV's that excel in almost every thing it is supposed to do. Described as a "Superb All-rounder", there is not much that this TV does not achieve. If you can get your hands on one of these then go for it.

LCD Flat Screen TV - The Case For Choosing an LCD Flat Screen TV Over Plasma

Many people are looking to replace their current tv with a slim and elegant flat screen tv. The first question many will ask is which is better, an LCD flat screen tv or a plasma tv?

This is a bit like asking which is the better car to buy Honda or Toyota? Some will insist Honda, some will insist Toyota without question. Some will say neither and that you should only buy an American car. Before answering which car is better you need to know which models you are comparing, what needs you have regarding size and style and what price ranges you are looking at so you are truly comparing apples to apples.

Choosing a flat screen tv is no different. Before answering which is better you will need to know what size you are looking for, what your viewing environment is like, what your viewing habits are like, what price range you will be looking at and what special features you would like.

The good news is you can find some great LCD flat screen tvs and plasma tvs at prices that are becoming more and more reasonable, allowing you to enjoy high definition tv and sports as well as movies on your slim, digital tv.

In years past the decision between LCD and Plasma was a pretty easy one as the smallest plasma was in the upper 30" range and the largest LCD was in the lower 30" range so if you wanted a large home theater tv you would choose plasma and if you wanted a small, flat panel tv you would get an LCD. LCD has made great strides in the past year to bring high quality, affordable flat panels to the market at competitive prices.

Flat panel tvs have a lot of uses and benefits. If you are looking at a tv for the kitchen or a small tv for a bedroom, the decision to buy an LCD is really a no brainer as LCDs dominate the market for flat panels under 37".

Another benefit of LCD flat panel tvs is the brightness of the display. If you will be viewing your tv in areas with bright lights and a lot of ambient light from outside, then it is a good idea to choose an LCD flat panel tv as LCDs will be easier to see then a typical plasma tv.

Another important consideration is what you intend to view on the tv. An LCD flat panel tv will typically have a higher native resolution then a comparable plasma tv making it a natural choice if you intend to use the tv for computer use or gaming use.

If you are looking to get the full 1080p HD display for your video games or for HD movie formats such as HD DVD and Blu ray then you will have more LCD flat panel tv choices then you will plasma.

In the past burn in was a concern for plasmas in scenes where static images such as video game scores or stock market ticker tape banners would remain on the screen for long periods of time. Technological advancements in plasmas have greatly minimized the risk of plasma burn in, but still if you are looking to be free from burn in worry then the choice of LCD is a natural one.

Another advantage of LCD is that the weight is lighter and it will generally consume less power then that of a comparable plasma tv.

Early versions of plasma held advantages over LCD in terms of deeper blacks, better response times and a richness in color. LCD flat panel tv has closed the gap significantly in the past year in terms of picture quality, with some models even offering 120Hz technology and LED backlighting for incredible contrast ratios and a crisp, vivid picture.

While both LCD and plasma can offer a crisp, clear picture in a slim flat panel tv, an LCD flat panel tv seems to be a natural choice for those looking to maximize their resolutions for video gaming, for those viewing the tv in bright rooms, for those looking for smaller secondary tvs, as well as those looking to minimize power consumption requirements.

CRT VS LCD Lag Time

I saw a few videos on youtube that show a LCD monitor or TV lagging behind an old CRT monitor. I didn't seem to find any obvious lag on my lcds so I decided to compare them myself. The LCD is made by Westinghouse and the CRT is made by Gateway. In my house I have four CRT-tvs. One from Gateway, one from Toshiba, one from Sharp and one that I don't know. (two are just sitting in a closet and one of them is a black and white 70's TV which I have videos on) and I have three LCD-tvs. One from Emerson, one from Sanyo and one from Sony. LCD TV Monitors' Color, Angle and Sizes

Despite of this sleekness, and any other good things, there are some complaints about LCD TVs. It undergoes high burn rates, that is, the images stick with the pixels for some time. To add, other LCD monitors can not support high density games. These games need HD compatibility. Ghosting effect produced by the TVs is also one of the problems. Yet, LCD TVs are continually improved just to make these indifferences redundant. Because of the desire to make LCD TVs sleeker, buttons are made smaller which makes it hard to be read.

But there is also a better thing. The company is now designing a kind of TV that will allow its viewers to watch several programs in a TV by just changing the angle of how they view.
